Hi, I'm Dominic. I've read your financials from the other side.

Before HarperCo, I spent 9+ years on the lending side — at Island credit unions and chartered banks — reviewing the financials of small businesses applying for loans. Along the way I managed a portfolio of more than $70 million in commercial loans and structured deals up to $5 million. I was bonded throughout those years. I saw — over and over — the same thing: good businesses getting turned down not because they weren't viable, but because no one had shown a lender what they were really worth.

It wasn't their fault. Most small business owners didn't start their company to become accountants. They started it to bake bread, build decks, run a clinic, open a shop — or in plenty of PEI cases, fish a season. The money side was the thing they promised themselves they'd sort out "next month" — until next month became next year, and suddenly a lender was asking for three years of financials, a forecast, and a plan they didn't have.

The fishing piece is personal. I grew up around the industry here, and I know the sector cold — how a licence gets financed, how crew share actually works, and why a captain's money runs on the rhythm of the season, not a calendar month. When a fishing business needs to borrow, plan, or steady its cash flow, it deserves someone who's sat on the bank's side of that deal.

I wanted to be on the other side of that conversation. The side where the answer to "can we see your financials?" is always yes.

Stubborn opinions
about how this should work.

Every firm has values. Most are generic. These are the ones HarperCo operates on, even when it's inconvenient.

01

Advice should be plain-spoken.

No jargon, no lectures, no being talked down to. The whole point of an advisor is to make the confusing stuff clear — so you understand your own numbers and know exactly what to do next.

02

Small businesses deserve real tools.

You're not too small for a modern stack. You're not too small for clean reports. You're not too small for fast responses. That's marketing a bigger firm uses to justify its bill.

03

Depth beats breadth, always.

An advisor who knows 15 clients deeply will always serve you better than one managing 80 shallowly. Fewer clients isn't a limitation — it's the point.

04

Your numbers tell a story.

Every set of financials tells a story about what the business is, where it's headed, and whether it's ready for what's next. We make sure that story is accurate, honest, and ready to be told — to a lender, a partner, or yourself.
